Javeed Research operates as a SEBI-registered Research Analyst (RA). An RA helps investors understand securities through documented research and recommendations supported by analysis. Because investors often confuse research with personalised advice or trade execution, this guide first explains the RA’s role and then shows where an investment adviser and stockbroker differ.

Quick answer: A SEBI-registered research analyst studies securities and publishes research reports or recommendations. The RA does not automatically provide a personal financial plan or execute trades. Personalised advice belongs to an appropriately registered investment adviser, while market-order execution is handled through a registered stockbroker.

What does a SEBI-registered research analyst do?

A research analyst evaluates information such as company financials, industry conditions, valuations, price and volume behaviour, economic developments and material corporate disclosures. The analyst may publish research reports and investment recommendations supported by relevant data and analysis.

The purpose is to help an investor evaluate a security or market opportunity using a stated research view, rationale and risk framework. Research is not a promise of profit, and the investor remains responsible for deciding whether a recommendation is suitable for their own circumstances.

When should an investor use a research analyst’s service?

An RA service may be relevant when an investor wants documented securities research rather than a complete personal financial plan. Depending on the report and service scope, the research may explain:

  • the security or market opportunity being studied;
  • the research rationale and material assumptions;
  • important risks or conditions that could invalidate the view;
  • a time horizon and, where applicable, an entry condition, target, stop-loss or exit update; and
  • subsequent research communication or closure of the recommendation.

These elements are research conclusions, not assured outcomes. A research subscription also does not require an investor to share a trading password, demat password, banking OTP or remote-device access.

How is a research analyst different from an investment adviser and stockbroker?

Intermediary Primary role Typical investor need
Research Analyst (RA) Studies securities, industries and market information and issues research reports or recommendations. Research-led views about securities or market opportunities.
Investment Adviser (IA) Provides advice based on the client’s goals, finances, time horizon and risk profile. Personalised financial or investment guidance.
Stockbroker Connects investors to the exchange and executes buy and sell orders through a trading platform. Account access, order execution, statements and transaction support.

This comparison describes the main function of each category. The exact services depend on the intermediary’s registration, agreements and disclosures. Always read the provider’s documents rather than relying only on a label used in an advertisement.

Javeed Research practical check: Before paying any fee, ask who prepared the research, whether the service is personalised to you and who will execute the order. Those three answers usually identify the relevant intermediary and registration.

What can a research report contain?

SEBI’s investor-education material explains that research analysts focus on market research and securities analysis rather than personalised financial planning. A report may discuss a research view, entry condition, target, stop-loss or invalidation level, time horizon, rationale and risks. The exact fields depend on the security, research method and stated scope of the service.

A research recommendation should be read in full. If you are unfamiliar with its fields, use our guide on how to read a stock research recommendation from entry to exit.

What does an investment adviser do?

An investment adviser’s defining feature is personalisation. The adviser considers client-specific information before providing advice. Relevant information may include income, assets, liabilities, financial goals, investment horizon, liquidity needs and ability to tolerate risk.

This is different from reading the same security research report that is issued to a group of subscribers. If you need a complete financial plan or advice tailored to your personal circumstances, verify whether the provider is registered and authorised for that service.

What does a stockbroker do?

A stockbroker is the regulated intermediary through which orders reach the stock exchange. Brokers commonly provide trading platforms, contract notes, account statements, margin information, order status and customer support. Full-service brokers may also provide research, while discount brokers may focus mainly on execution and technology.

Opening a broker account does not automatically mean that every message, social-media post or third-party recommendation shown to you is personalised advice. Identify who produced the research and which registered entity is responsible for each service.

Can the same company provide more than one service?

Where regulations permit, an organisation may operate under multiple registrations or through separately identified business divisions, subject to applicable segregation, disclosure and conflict-management requirements. That does not make the categories interchangeable. Investors should confirm:

  • Which legal entity is providing the specific service?
  • What registration number applies to that service?
  • Who receives the fee?
  • Is the communication general research or personalised advice?
  • Who is responsible for order execution and account complaints?

If the answers are unclear, ask for written clarification before making a payment or acting on a recommendation.

How should investors verify each intermediary?

  1. Get the complete registration number. Do not rely only on a logo, profile name or claim such as “SEBI registered.”
  2. Search official records. Match the name, registration category and available contact information.
  3. Check the website disclosures. Review service scope, fees, risks, conflicts, grievance contacts and refund terms.
  4. Confirm the payment destination. Do not pay an unrelated account merely because a person contacted you on WhatsApp or social media.
  5. Keep credentials private. Never disclose banking OTPs, demat passwords, trading passwords or remote device access.

Which service do you need?

Start with the problem you are trying to solve. If you want documented research on securities, an RA service may be relevant. If you need advice built around your personal finances and goals, look for the appropriate investment-advisory service. If you need to place and settle market orders, you need a registered broker and demat arrangement.

Some investors may use more than one service. The important safeguard is to understand where one role ends and another begins.

Frequently asked questions

Is a research analyst the same as a financial adviser?

No. A research analyst primarily produces securities research and recommendations. Personalised advice based on an individual client’s financial circumstances belongs to a different service category.

Can a stockbroker give research recommendations?

Some brokerage organisations provide research in addition to execution services. Check the applicable registration, the named research provider and the disclosures accompanying the report.

Does SEBI registration guarantee profits?

No. Registration establishes a regulatory framework; it does not guarantee that a research view, advice or trade will be profitable.

Can a research analyst operate my trading account?

A research subscription does not require you to share trading credentials or OTPs. Keep control of your account and execute decisions only through authorised channels.

The main takeaway

A SEBI-registered research analyst helps investors understand securities through documented research and recommendations supported by analysis. An investment adviser personalises advice to a client’s circumstances, while a stockbroker provides the regulated channel for executing market transactions. Verify the specific registration and written scope for the service you are buying.
